The former Liverpool man has won countless trophies with the Spanish giants, but his days appear to be numbered after losing his first-team spot to Daniel Carvajal.

Reports that Arbeloa has fallen out with Bernabeu supremo Carlo Ancelotti have led to wide-spread resentment against the 31-year-old, culminating in him being booed by the home crowd.

The unrest surrounding the Spanish international is likely to see the player offered an escape route from his Los Blancos hell, with Arsenal and Chelsea being the most likely candidates.

Manchester United have warned Arsenal that it will cost upwards of £16m to sign England international Danny Welbeck.

Reports of the 23-year-old joining the Gunners have gathered momentum after being told he is free to leave Old Trafford.

But the two Premier League heavyweights differ on their valuation of Welbeck, and could be set for extensive negotiations to resolve a deal.

Welbeck's appearance in United's embarrassing second-round defeat to MK Dons last night is a clear sign of where he stands in Van Gaal's estimations.

Arsenal have assumed pole position in the race to sign Atletico Madrid defender Toby Alderweireld.

Reports claim the Gunners are on the verge of agreeing a deal with Atletico Madrid for the 25-year-old Belgian international.

Arsene Wenger is keen to acquire another centre-half after to loss of Thomas Vermaelen to Catalan giants Barcelona, and the quick imposing figure of Alderweireld could prove the perfect remedy.

Although supporters would rather Wenger focus on replacing the injured Olivier Giroud, bolstering their defensive ranks for a long and unpredictable season can only be seen as a good thing.
