With “Shake It Off,” Taylor Swift has essentially re-written a beloved cheerleader’s anthem to give everyone a reason to let loose: Ballerinas? Yes. Break dancers? Sure. That girl on the bleachers? Of course. So, even though the Mark Romanek-directed video has sparked a healthy debate over how inclusive the video may be – its YouTube still is of Swift, gawking at the sight of twerkers after she crawled beneath their legs – the lead 1989 single was bound to catch on.
Just a few days after its premiere, a dance company has already paid tribute to “Shake It Off.” At a Raising Cane’s restaurant in Lewisville, Texas, dozens of members from Dimensions Dance Company broke out into a flash mob. Four of them posed as ballet dancers. One did a backflip in the middle of the floor. Meanwhile, a young blond woman alternated between dancing flawlessly and appearing overwhelmed, just as Swift did in her own video. At the song’s end, she even did the awkward curtsy.
Swift could not have been more pleased by the end result. “So @markromanek just sent me this and I’m hyperventilating with joy over it,” she said on Twitter. See the “Shake If Off” flash mob below.
